Program Description:

The Optometric/Ophthalmic Technician is a 130-clock hour Program. The course is instructed and led by a licensed nurse who is also a Nationally Certified Optometric/Ophthalmic Technician. The Optometric/
Ophthalmic Technician program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to support optometrists and ophthalmologists in delivering high-quality eye care. This comprehensive program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on training in a skills lab and clinical skills in an eye clinic to prepare students for a successful career in the field of eye care.
Upon successful completion and graduation from this Program, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and a Training Completion Affirmation Form. After passing the American Allied Health (AAH) National Certification Examination, the graduate shall be certified Nationally as a Certified Optometric Technician (COA).

Admission Requirements:

  1. Fill out an Application either online or in person.
  2. Complete the Enrollment Agreement in person or electronically.
  3. Minimum age: 18 Years.
  4. High School Diploma, GED, or another Equivalency, or higher.
  5. Current Government-issued Photo ID: e.g., driver’s license, passport, military card, green card, work authorization card, or tribal card.
  6. Social Security Card or replacement letter from the Social Security Administration’s office.
  7. Criminal Background Screening. (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $35.00).
  8. Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test (PPD Test). (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $35.00).
  9. Current BLS from American Heart Association required. (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $60.00).
  10. Drug Test. (Offered at MedNoc for a cost of $50.00).
  11. During Flu Season, a Flu shot record may be required before attending clinical.
    ***NOTE: Some clinical sites may require additional requirements such as drug screens, immunization
    records, flu shots during flu season, or wearing a mask at the clinical site. The school will inform you if
    any of these items are required on the day of enrollment.

Optometric/Ophthalmic Technician Course Objectives:

  • Patient Interaction: Develop excellent patient care skills, including effective communication, patient history taking, and the administration of eye drops and medications. Emphasis is placed on creating a comfortable and professional environment for patients.
  • Fundamentals of Eye Care: Gain a solid foundation in eye anatomy, physiology, and common eye conditions. Learn about the structure and function of the eye, visual pathways, and how to recognize and understand various eye diseases.
  • Diagnostic Techniques: Master the use of specialized equipment and techniques for conducting eye examinations. Training includes visual acuity tests, retinoscopy, tonometry, and other essential diagnostic procedures.
  • Clinical Procedures: Learn to assist in a variety of clinical procedures such as contact lens fitting, corneal topography, visual field testing, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Understand the principles of surgical assistance in ophthalmic procedures.
  • Optical Dispensing: Acquire knowledge in the selection, fitting, and adjustment of eyewear. Understand the principles of lens design, materials, and measurements to ensure optimal visual correction for patients.
    To understand and apply principles of optical dispensing, including frame selection, lens measurement, and fitting.
  • Administrative Skills: Gain proficiency in the administrative aspects of an eye care practice, including medical billing and coding, electronic health records (EHR) management, appointment scheduling, and inventory control.
  • Professional Development: Prepare for certification exams and professional practice through comprehensive review sessions and mock exams. Emphasis is placed on ethical practice, professional behavior, and continuous learning.

National Certification Examination:
After completing Optometric/Ophthalmic Technicians training at MedNoc Training College, you must take the Certified Optometric/Ophthalmic Technicians), a National Certification Exam offered by American Allied Health (AAH). The exam is offered at MTC.
Optometric/Ophthalmic Technicians Certification Exam:

  • One hundred fifty questions in the multiple-choice and true/false format.
  • Scored items total, or which 30 are pretest questions.
  • Exam time: 2 hours.
  • 75% to pass.
  • There is no limit to how many times one may retake the exam. AAH provides the first retake at no additional cost; subsequent retakes will require a $30.00 retake fee.
